Abstract:
Objective:The study examined the role of attachment in mediating the relationship between compulsive exercise and eating disorder symptoms among college students. Methods:Participants were 466 male(study 1)and 334 female(study 2)college students.Self-report questionnaires adopted to assess attachment, compulsive exercise and eating disorder symptoms. Results:Compulsive exercise predicted eating disorder symptoms significantly in both samples.Among men, both dimensions of adult attachment, namely attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance, partially mediated the relationship between compulsive exercise and eating disorder symptoms, while only attachment anxiety mediated the pathological pathway from compulsive exercise to eating disorder symptoms in women. Conclusions:Compulsive exercise was an important risk factor in developing eating disorder symptoms among college students, anxiety and avoidance dimensions of attachment could explain the association between compulsive exercise and eating disorder symptoms.Further, the mediating role of attachment differed between men and women.
